The IJM Advocacy Summit
In October of 2019, hundreds of people from all 50 states came to Washington D.C. to advocate for the rights of women and children facing violence in Central America.* I was tasked with project management of the campaign, on-site strategy, and experience design.
*On October of 2021, the bill which we lobbied for, was passed.
Experience Design
When I created the project charter and briefed the Advocacy Summit, I knew that having interactive experimental art was a non-negotiable. My initial vision included elements locally sourced in Central America, such as the tablescapes and coffee, which were cultural landmarks for our attendees, and our interactive art piece was no different. In concepting this piece, I was inspired by the alfombras (translated to runners or rugs) of Guatemala. These artistic masterpieces are typically created with flowers during Holy Week. Our alfombra was a mural that stated: “Estoy Aqui,” translated to “I am here,” the brand slogan of the Advocacy Summit. This slogan was built with pieces of paper rolled in the installation. At the beginning of the event, the Alfombra was all white. Attendees were then asked to grab a slip of paper, write why they were there and turn it around, so now an orange side was visible. This change of color represented the change that happens when we all show up on behalf of others one by one.
